Set up in 2001, the Dot NAME generic domain extension is the single TLD meant for personal sites only. These domain names can be personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other titles people are popular by. At the beginning, solely 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you wished to purchase john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already grabbed third-level names remained functional.
